Full course description
This course will focus on how content-area teachers can successfully incorporate reading and writing into their disciplines.
In session one, participants will learn how to enhance disciplinary reading within their classrooms. This course will dive into strategies for close reading and how to guide students to become independent readers of discipline-based text. Participants will engage with text as well as recreate a text-based lesson from their own classrooms.
In session two, participants will learn how to create a space for the writing process within the disciplines. Participants will learn about the forms of writing and the characteristics of each form. We will discuss effective routines for engaging students in the writing process, including using mentor texts, generating topics, and conferencing. In addition, this course will address how to assess both the writing and the content. Applying the principles of backward design, participants will plan a writing lesson for their content-area course.
This professional development course aligns to the CPS Framework for Teaching components 1a, 1b, 1d, 1e, 3b, 3c, 3d, 4a, and 4d.
