Full course description

The deadly heat wave that hit Chicago in July of 1995 impacted the entire city. However, it was particularly deadly for community members who were poor, isolated & sick. The hurricanes that struck in 2017 impacted whole regions, but it is the communities of color with the least economic & political capital that, in many cases, still struggle for basic resources. Climate change will impact every community, as we all share the same atmosphere. However, while the poorest members of the global community did little to drive climate change, they will be hardest hit. This workshop will provide a clear and concise overview of the causes & impacts of climate change & outline the political, economic & social issues of our warming planet. It will also outline how the response to climate change is intertwined with political will, community action & the pursuit of equity. There will be a particular emphasis on local efforts to intertwine social justice & climate justice. This offering addresses the CPS Framework for Teaching Components 1a, 2b, 3a, 3b, 3c, 4a, & 4d.
