Full course description
Online Only - Synchronous | The Pedagogy of the Oppressed, written by Paulo Freire and published in 1968 while he was in exile from a military dictatorship, is a foundational text in the literature of critical pedagogy. The Pedagogy of the Oppressed is one of the most widely read education books and remains critically relevant despite being published over half a century ago. During this professional development offering, we will read the book and engage in a chapter-by-chapter discussion, making connections to our work and current political context. During this professional development, we will discuss questions such as: Can education be neutral? What are the political and ethical responsibilities of an educator? What are the hidden curricula of our educational systems? What is Freire’s understanding of key concepts such as dialogue and critical thinking? This professional development offering is aligned with CPS Framework for Teaching Domains 1e, 2a, 2b, 4a,4d, 4e.
