Online Only | Most PreK teachers are familiar with the Clean Up song (“Clean up, clean up, everybody everywhere”), but what other songs can we use to support transitions and routines in our students’ day? ChiME presenters will teach participants songs for morning routines, transitions, and end-of-day, as well as provide links to YouTube videos and lyrics that teachers can use in lieu of singing. We will also explore ways teachers can use their singing voices to get students’ attention without damaging their voice or adding to abrasive noise in the classroom. By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
• describe some ways in which music supports student learning
• describe some ways in which music can support teaching
• independently sing at least one song from each of the repertoire categories covered (e.g. morning routines, clean up songs, transition cues, calming songs, end-of-day songs)
• access quality recordings of repertoire to use in their classrooms
This PD explores ways that teachers can use song to engage students in classroom routines and procedures, and it aligns with elements of Domains 2, 3, and 4 of the CPS Framework for Teaching, namely:
2a: Creating an environment of respect and rapport
2c: Managing classroom procedures
2d: Managing student behavior
3a: Communicating with students
4d: Growing and developing professionally
Teacher participation in this PD will also support student achievement of the Illinois SEL standards that address communication, responsibility, and community, namely: 1C.1b, 2C.1a, 2C.1b, and 3C.1a.
