Whether one is a special education teacher or a general classroom teacher, they almost certainly have at least one diverse learner in their class. Music can be a spectacularly useful tool to help engage those students (and all students) in new ways, to help them navigate both academic and interpersonal challenges, and to reach them when nothing else seems to work. In this class, participants will work with a certified Music Therapist and teaching artist who will help fill their toolbox with musical teaching techniques they can use immediately. No musical experience or talent required!
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
• describe some ways in which music supports student learning
• describe some ways in which music can support teaching
• perform or access songs to help students with emotional regulation, interpersonal behaviors, and self-efficacy
• demonstrate ways to engage students through sound and movement
This PD explores techniques teacher can use music to support the academic, social, and emotional needs of all students, and it aligns with elements of Domains 1, 3, and 4 of the CPS Framework for Teaching, namely: 1a (Demonstrating knowledge of content and pedagogy), 1b (demonstrating knowledge of students), 1d (designing coherent instruction), 3a (communicating with students), 3c (engaging students in learning), and 4d (growing and developing professionally). The strategies explored in this PD will also support student achievement of the Illinois SEL standards, especially with regard to self-management and maintaining positive relationships.
