Full course description

How can we create schools and classrooms in which the progressive values of teachers are reflected in the work they do with their students, bringing about better outcomes for students; happier and more fulfilled teachers; and a more just, equitable, creative, and sustainable society?
The punitive and narrow approaches of the education “reform” movement (a) are ineffective pedagogical approaches to genuine growth and learning not rooted in what we know about human development; (b) reflect a worldview based on the notion that our children are a problem rather than a solution and don’t reflect the values of justice, equality and sustainability; and (c) have led to more burnout and less professional satisfaction and joy because they do not match the values of many educators.
In order to genuinely transform our schools, we must recognize the subtle narratives that dominate the current system. Above all else, this means reimagining a classroom as a relational space rather than a collection of individuals in competition.
