Online - Asynchronous | Many educators are aware of the sad story of how schools to not help students become artists but rather they, unknowingly, educate students “out of” the arts, and force them to focus on the more mathematical and scientific concepts. If an alien race where to write about the educational system on this earth, it would make this statement “It seems that whenever a child expressed interest in wanting to paint, dance, bang on the drums, perform drama, or simply draw - their parents and teachers say “Those sound nice, but it will not get you a proper paying job”. Humans are a people that exalt the scientific side of the brain and downplay the artistic side. In this course, by adding the “A” for arts, into the STEM acronym, we want teachers to have a new perspective and an upgraded way of thinking that places value on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math in the context of and in promotion for the ARTS. We ask you right now as a teacher… if you could turn into a junior high student right now and spend the next 2 hours on any topic you like, would you choose listening to your favorite music and drawing, or in learning the Pythagorean Theorem and doing math problems? It’s time to let the “kid” inside of you out and discover how the arts can fuel curiosity and stimulate creative thinking in the STEM subjects.
This offering is aligned to the CPS Framework for Teaching Domain 1, 1d, 3c.
