Voices Across Time: Teaching Through the Legacy of Black Women’s Leadership from Ancient Africa to Today
Jul 8, 2026 - Jul 8, 2026
2 credits
Full course description
This dynamic 90-minute professional development session engages educators in uncovering the legacies of Black women leaders—from ancient Africa to the present. Through gallery walk exploration, group dialogue, and culturally responsive lesson planning, participants will reflect on their own teaching identity and expand their historical literacy. Educators will gain tools to create inclusive, equity-centered classrooms where all students—especially those from historically underrepresented backgrounds—can see themselves reflected in the curriculum, engage in critical inquiry, and build confidence as learners and leaders.
Learning Objectives/Outcomes:
1. Analyze and reflect on the historical contributions of Black women leaders and activists across time, connecting these narratives to contemporary issues of equity and identity in education. [IL SEL Goal 2B; Illinois PD Standard #3: Diversity in Learning; CRTLS Standard 1A, Standard 2A, & Standard 4A]
2. Apply culturally responsive and sustaining pedagogical strategies by incorporating underrepresented voices and historical perspectives into lesson planning and classroom engagement. [Illinois PD Standard #6: Cultural Competence; CRTLS Standard 1A, Standard 3B, & Standard 4A]
3. Critically evaluate their own positionality and teaching practice through dialogue and inquiry, fostering equitable learning environments that support all learners. [Illinois PD Standard #2: Student Learning and Development; IL SEL Goal 1A; CRTLS Standard 1B, Standard 2B, & Standard 1A]
