Full course description
Online Only | Now more than ever is a time for teachers to learn how to create a trauma sensitive learning environment for students of color since they experience the acute and sustained forms of traumatic events such as poverty, crime, and the pandemic that is all being compounded that inhibits the development of their social emotional well-being. In addition, participants will learn to understand how to emphasize the importance of finding a way for diverse individuals to share their experiences. This course will highlight the challenges teachers face creating a trauma-sensitive learning environment through remote learning amid the COVID-19 pandemic. We will examine how teachers can support and nurture their students’ emotional well-being before, during, and after traumatic events in order to mitigate the impact of complex childhood trauma. Many of our students have been exposed to multiple tragic events, often of an invasive, interpersonal nature. This course helps teachers learn to deal with the wide-ranging, long-term impact of this exposure that often results in grief and depression, adversely affecting their students’ learning and social/emotional well-being.
