The Right to Hug Curriculum
Jan 26, 2027 - Feb 23, 2027
15 credits
Instructor: Sarah Wattar
Full course description
Across the U.S., many local jails have eliminated in-person visits between incarcerated people and their children and families, replacing them with expensive phone and video calls. The Right to Hug project challenges these practices through lawsuits brought by children and their incarcerated parents and families, and this curriculum uses these cases as a vehicle for students to investigate the broader systems, policies, and economic incentives surrounding incarceration and family separation. The professional development will include hands-on activities drawn from the curriculum, such as analyzing a real legal complaint and media coverage, examining research on incarceration and family separation, practicing a jail investigation using FOIAs and other primary sources, and exploring ways students can present their learning. Teachers will leave with a clear understanding of the curriculum's learning objectives, instructional approach, and how the modular unit can be adapted to different subjects, grade levels, and classroom contexts.
